Welcome news is that the MCI stands disbanded!. 6 member panel takes over. Hopefully this panel takes the view of many to formulate the new policies of a new board. Lets wish them well!

  1. Thsi happened faster than expected. The pressure on the Government was the reaction of the public to enormity of the scam and the Governments failure to act in the past. They still have to answer for their sins of connivace. Shyamprasad

  2. I agree with you. On the other hand these 6 people should take the help of other well meaning people in our profession to formulate new guidelines for each aspect of medical education in India. One of the way could be creation of a web site for people to put in suggestions. The draft guidelines should also be put up for viable suggestions.
Its time, we in India think about unifying and standardizing the undergraduate and post graduate education for doctors. One university or college each instead of 88 individual universities should be set up for MBBS as well as for all disciplines of medicine like surgery, ENT etc. Each such university or college can have zonal branches to ease the administrative work. But the central command should be singular for each discipline.
    Thanks for your comments.

  4. disbanding the MCI and giving it the government - who's more corrupt? does that sound like a great alternative? loss of autonomy makes it worse. have you seen NGO'S at work - theres provision for a beaurocrat in evry single one of them and all public money goes waste. We need good watchdogs as a separate body - in addition, make it mandatory to change the governing body every year or two - most importantly, a public declaration of all major proceedings every year.

  5. I agree with you. The whole system becoming transparent in itself acts as a watch dog. After an inspection, the deficiencies and the remedial actions to be taken should be put on the website! As it is a statutory body, no ministry can control it directly; that has been taken care by the ordinance. Any control/denial/acceptance by the ministry regarding the MCI should also be on the website. One of the reason why the same administrators continued over the years is non availability of the medical intelligentsia for the job. Low salaries and no incentive keeps them away. Thus doctors who have always spent time and energy in district and state politics climb the ladder. Time to appoint people who have been trained in hospital administration to the body!

  6. Dear Rajeev
The panel are indeed eminent medical people.
I have two points to make
    1. being a good doctor does not necessarily translate to being a good administrator
    2. All the panel members are busy practicing doctors. How much time will they be able to devote to the MCI????

  7. We will have to wait and watch! I hope things will improve, al least for a few years. I agree with you regarding the available time for busy clinicians. It will be extremely busy for them to both the jobs; your point is well taken. Running MCI will also require some full time honest people who can help these board of governors.
